When growing your own bonsai trees, another consideration is the size of the tree. Remember that bonsai trees come in many different sizes. For instance, if you want a bonsai tree that will fit nicely atop your coffee table, select a small tree. Once you have an idea of how big you want your bonsai plant to be, go to a nursery or bonsai shop and find a suitable plant. If you cannot find a nursery or bonsai shop in your locality, you will just have to do things the old-fashioned way and start from the very beginning. When we say start from the very beginning, it means that you find some seeds of your favorite tree and plant the seeds in seed bags. Once the seedlings start to grow, you may get your seedlings ready to be transferred to pots.
It can be quite tricky when you transfer your seedlings into small pots. For a diminutive plant to fit into a small pot, you will need to Carefully remove most of its roots. You should be very vigilant when cutting away the roots of these plants, because this pruning could cause the plants to die. Before putting a bonsai plant into a pot, put some wires into the root systems of the plant to help it fit into your pot. Do not add too much soil to the pot. Put your bonsai tree into the pot, making sure that you put just enough soil in to cover the roots of the plant and to help it to retain moisture.
