The art of creating Bonsai Plants began in the Oriental areas of the world. Today, Bonsai Plants are used for decoration in many Oriental homes. However, there are some groups of modern women of Chinese ancestry who object to the production of bonsai plants. According to these women, bonsai making is too much like the ancient Chinese practice of binding of the feet of women. Note that in ancient China women with tiny feet were considered so beautiful that they were often compelled to wear iron sandals to control the growth of their feet.

The antiquated practice of wearing iron sandals caused many Chinese women to become crippled for life and resulted in much suffering. Since the binding of the feet of the women is analogous to the practice of confining the roots of the bonsai plants to small pots to prevent the Trees from growing, many women of Chinese descent are uncomfortable with the idea of making bonsai plants.

Although there are some sectors that object to the fact that the production of bonsai plants impedes their natural growth, thereby restricting the natural flow of things, the art of bonsai making is something that many Orientals are truly proud of. Among oriental families, this art has been passed from generation to generation.. At present, many people in the United States and Europe practice the art of bonsai making and thousands of people all over the world now have bonsai plants in their homes.

The Nature of Bonsai Plants

True bonsai plants have very small roots systems. Since the roots of bonsai plants cannot hold much water,, they will wilt easily and die if you do not water them frequently. To keep these plants alive, you need to sprinkle water on them, preferable twice each day. However, you should take Care not to put excessive water into bonsai plants, because too much water could cause their delicate roots to rot.

Most bonsai plants are intended to grow Indoors or in areas which are well protected from the elements. Note that these plants are very sensitive to the wind and sunlight. If you expose them to excessive heat, bonsai plants can die. However, if you practice diligent Care of your bonsai plants, these plants could last hundreds of years. It is a Japanese and Chinese custom and common practice to pass bonsai plants from one generation to another.
