The Art of Learning to Grow Bonsai
Masters of the craft have spent many years perfecting this art form, but anyone can learn how to
grow bonsai with a little knowledge behind them. The result will be a beautiful and amazing display of visual art
in living form.
Bonsai began millennia ago in China; the first reported presence of this art form was reported in B.C. when an
emperor caused the creation of his entire empire to be constructed in miniature form just outside his palace window
so he would be able to gaze out of his window and view his entire kingdom. The idea behind the creative skill was
to combine the elements of nature, unity and balance in the vision of a tree. The result was a miniaturized version
of something that is a common sight in nature: a tree. The most popular varieties of trees used for bonsai are
Japanese Maple, Japanese elm and juniper, although many other varieties are also used. Creating a diminutive
version of the common tree variety in perfect detail is something that is a learned through practice; not something
that can be attempted and just performed.
While anyone can make a bonsai tree, it takes skill, education and talent to actually grow one that will succeed. The
art of learning to grow bonsai cannot be obtained overnight, or within a short period of time. The actual
training of the tree is a continual work in progress; pruning, cutting and training that is completed over years
and not hours. After all, a tree in nature continually grows and spreads out until it finally reaches maturity.
The same is true for a bonsai tree, which can live for many years; during which it is meticulously pruned to
gain the semblance of its cousin in nature.
Many people do not realize that actual bonsai trees are works in progress. They make the erroneous assumption that
when the tree is purchased, it can simply be set up for display and will retain its beautiful and glorious shape as
it grows to develop into a mature tree. Nothing could be further from the truth. In a natural setting, trees must
be continually evaluated and pruned to retain the shape that it has been destined to achieve. The same is true for
bonsai trees; they must be nurtured to achieve that amazingly ideal structure and shape of a natural tree only in
diminutive form.
If buying a bonsai tree is in your sights for either a gift or for a personal
display, it is important to realize that it is a work in progress. Learning the techniques and tips to grow bonsai
will be an essential part of acquiring a bonsai tree in order to have a successful bonsai display.
